Maths – Entry Level for ESOL Learners

What will the course help me to do?

  • To understand and answer simple maths problems in everyday situations
  • To develop the necessary language skills to answer everyday maths questions.
  • To gain a Maths Functional Skills qualification at Entry 2.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand and use numbers up to 100
  • Add up and subtract in everyday situations
  • Use doubling and halving in practical situations
  • Recognise and use measures like time and money
  • Recognise sequences of numbers, including odd and even numbers
  • Use simple scales, e.g. rulers, weighing scales and measuring jugs
  • Know about everyday shapes
  • Find things out from lists of information
  • Understand and use words used for calculations
  • Understand and use words used for measures
  • Use methods to help you read and understand problems
  • Use methods to help you draw conclusions
  • Understand offers in shops

Who is the course for and what do I need to know to start the course?

Adults (16+) who want to develop their maths and English skills at the same time. You will already have skills at Entry 1. We will check your maths and reading skills before you join the course to make sure that the course is the right level for you.

Will I gain a qualification?

Yes. City & Guilds Functional Skills in Maths at Entry 2.

How will I learn?

You will work in groups with other learners and on your own. You will work on problems and practical activities, talk with other learners and use computers. Your tutor will give you feedback on what you are doing well and what you need to do to improve.

How long is the course?

Courses start in September and run once a week until the end of June. Each session is 2 ½ hours long.

What could this course lead to?

Maths – Entry 3 Functional Skills.

Expectations

You will be expected to attend every session and complete homework for up to 1 hour a week. Re-imbursement of exam fees may be sought from learners who do not attend the exam.
