Are your English or Maths skills stopping you from getting on?
We run many courses for adults who want to become more confident in reading, writing, maths and spoken English.
Improving these skills can be the beginning of the road to achieving your long term goals. Whether it's getting a job, a promotion or enrolling on a further or higher education course, having the qualifications to show you have the right level of English and maths skills has never been more important.
If English is your second language and you need to build your confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing, then an ESOL course is right for you.
Our courses will help you to:
- Brush up your reading and writing skills.
- Develop good communication skills.
- Improve your employability skills eg. how to apply for a job, write a CV, perform well at interview.
- Improve your English grammar and punctuation skills.
- Improve your spelling.
- Build confidence in working with numbers and apply maths skills to real life situations.
How much will a course cost?
English and Maths courses are FREE to UK and EU citizens. ESOL courses are free for people on Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) or other eligible income-based benefits who are doing the course to help gain employment in the future. Other learners may be eligible for significantly discounted fees.

Phone the centre or call in and tell them which course you are interested in.

They will book you a time to come in for a Skills Check.
Skills Checks take place at certain times of the year when spaces are available on the courses. This is usually the beginning of terms so keep a look out for adverts and publicity in your local area. If you miss these weeks, phone us anyway and we will let you know when the next Skills Checks are taking place.
After your Skills Check, the centre staff will offer you a place on a course at the right level at a time that suits you. If there are no suitable courses at that centre, we will refer you to another nearby centre.
Things to bring to your Skills Check:
- Your passport
- Proof of any benefits you receive
- Certificates from any English, Maths or ESOL qualifications you already have.
Please note: Unfortunately we do not have the facilities to look after children while you do your Skills Check. Please arrange for someone to look after them while you are being assessed.
