Art for the Community - Intermediate & Advanced

Intermediate Level

Course aims

To enable learners to begin to develop a personal style in painting. To enable learners to see the relevance of theoretical and historical development to their own working practices.

During the course you will look at skills for employment within the field.

Include elements of research and development into your working projects.

Consider how to develop and transfer your subject knowledge for community/ citizenship use.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the programme the learner will:

  • Mix primary and secondary colours, shades and tints
  • Investigate the visual and tactile qualities of media and materials
  • Develop skills in manipulating materials, equipment and techniques to create a range of effects
  • Have a basic understanding of formal elements and visual language
  • Develop skills in critical evaluation and self assessment and be able to communicate in written and verbal form effectively
  • Produce a range of work from direct observation and be able to use secondary sources to support research
  • Develop a repertoire of ideas and approaches and begin to establish a personal style of working
  • Produce finished work which shows developing technical competence in response to external assignments
  • Display work effectively using a variety of techniques
  • Use materials and equipment carefully and correctly observing health and safety regulations
  • Know about the skills and qualifications required for employment in the arts sector
  • To develop a portfolio

Who is the course for?

For learners who wish to achieve an good level of competence in drawing and painting, and who wish to progress to advanced level study in this or associated subjects.

Do I need any knowledge, skills or qualifications?

The course is suitable for learners who have studied at beginners level. At the start of this course, your tutor will carry out an initial assessment to check that the level is suitable for you.

What could this course lead to?

The course will provide a base from which to progress to other art and design subjects at intermediate level , or to drawing and painting courses at advanced level.

Advanced Level

Course aims

To enable learners to further develop their own aesthetic style and to further develop the learner’s creative and critical abilities. To provide learners with a base from which to progress to further study or employment.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this programme the learner will have achieved the following outcomes:

  • A depth and range of investigation using media and techniques resulting in an advanced level of skill
  • Conducted a broad range of experimental studies in the use of media and techniques to express ideas, moods and emotions
  • Confidently nominate materials, techniques and content in response to set tasks
  • Developed and presented ideas and concepts in visual and written form which show advanced levels of problem solving skills
  • Be able to give detailed analysis of contributory elements in own and others’ work and give meaningful critical evaluation in written and verbal form
  • Demonstrate knowledge of key world developments in art history and practice and link own practice to them
  • Produce work from direct observation which demonstrates advanced levels of technical and observational skill
  • Use visual language and formal elements in ways which conveys personal response to spiritual, moral or ethical concepts
  • Use materials and equipment suitably and observing health and safety regulations
  • Know about the skills and qualifications required for employment in the arts industry
  • To develop a portfolio

Who is the course for?

For those wishing to achieve an advanced level of competence in Drawing and Painting and/or who wish to progress to degree level study or employment.

Do I need any knowledge, skills or qualifications?

The course is suitable for learners who have achieved Intermediate level in Drawing and Painting and who have level 2 skills in literacy and numeracy (free help is available within BAES if required). At the start of this course, your tutor will carry out an initial assessment to check that the level is suitable for you.

What could this course lead to?

The course provides a base from which to progress to other Art and Design subjects at Level 3, to further or higher education at a college or university or into employment.
