Emergency First Aid at Work - Level 3 Award (Qualsafe)

Course aims

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require all employers to make arrangements to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. This includes carrying out a risk assessment, appointing a suitable amount of first aiders and providing appropriate first aid training. However, having the correct first aid provision in the workplace is not just a legal requirement, it is incredibly important for the safety of all members of staff.

Over a 3 day period, course Candidates will develop the skills and knowledge needed to deal with a range of first aid situations, including: Assessing an incident, managing an unresponsive casualty, CPR and defibrillation, recovery position, heart attack, stroke, choking, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis, shock, head and spinal injuries, chest injuries, wounds and bleeding, fractures, sprains, strains and dislocations, minor injuries, burns and scalds, poisoning and eye injuries.

Assessment Methods

5 x Practical assessments, 1 x Theory assessment (Multiple Choice Question Papers) and continuous formative assessment conducted throughout the course.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course candidates should be able to:

  • Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Identify how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
  • Identify the need for consent to provide first aid
  • Conduct a scene Survey
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
  • Summon appropriate assistance when necessary
  • Identify when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Demonstrate CPR using a manikin
  • Justify when to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate how to place a casualty in the recovery position
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is experiencing a seizure
  • Identify when choking is • Mild • Severe
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Recognise a casualty who is suffering from shock
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock Identify the severity of external bleeding
  • Demonstrate how to control external bleeding
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with • Small cuts • Grazes • Bruises • Small splinters
  • Administer first aid to a casualty with a nosebleed
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with minor burns and scalds
  • Recognise life threatening Bleeding
  • Know how to control life-threatening bleeding with wound packing and haemostatic dressings
  • Know how to control life threatening bleeding using a tourniquet
  • Complete a multiple choice question paper/ theory assessment

Who is the course for?

The qualification is specifically designed for individuals who wish to act as a first aider in their workplace. Successful candidates will learn how to manage a range of injuries and illnesses that could occur at work and will be equipped with the essential skills needed to give first aid. What’s more, as a regulated qualification, employers can book this course for their employees and rest assured that they have fulfilled their legal responsibilities for providing quality first aid training, without having to undertake any lengthy due diligence checks.

Do I need any knowledge, skills or qualifications to enrol?

No, but you will need to demonstrate practical skills to complete the assessments. Successful completion of a multiple choice question paper is also required. Learners musthave a good standard of spoken and written English.

Will I gain any qualifications?

Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at work.

How will I learn?

You will be assessed by your tutor/assessor using a range of methods. Elements such as CPR, dealing with bleeds etc. will be undertaken by practical demonstrations on mannequin. Other methods could include professional discussion, written assignments or multiple choice questions.

What could this course lead to?

This qualification will equip you to administer first aid as part of your current job role. It is valid for 3 years and then must be renewed.

What materials or equipment will I need to provide?

You will need a pen and paper and will receive The First Aid at Work handbook.

Other information

Please note that learners MUST attend ALL sessions and complete ALL practical assessments as well as achieving the pass rate on a Multi Choice Question Paper.

Please be aware practical assessments involve attending a casualty (mannequin) on the floor to administer First Aid. If you have mobility issues which may make this difficult for you, you MUST speak to the tutor BEFORE enrolment. Suitable clothing such as trousers or long skirts is recommended and learners may wish to bring their own mat or towel. Learners need to bring photographic ID to prove identity. Learners may bring a bilingual dictionary for use during the multiple choice questions on how to treat minor illness.

  • Complete all practical assessments.
  • Achieve a pass rate
  • Wearing suitable dress such as long skirt or trousers are recommended
  • Learners must bring proof of ID.
