To enable you to extend your knowledge and ability of the four main historical European scripts and associated decorative styles to produce finished work to a good standard

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who has studied calligraphy at beginners level and who wants to be able to produce lettering work of a more complex nature.

Entry requirements

You will need experience of calligraphy to be successful on this course. As the course involves taking notes and measurements, you will need to have basic levels of English and maths. You will have a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that it is suitable for you.

What will I learn?

  • Knowledge and ability to apply colour theory
  • To be able to produce work in the Foundational, Gothic, Uncial and Italic hands using accurate lowercase and decorative capitals
  • An understanding of the historical contexts and uses of the above scripts
  • To produce decorative designs appropriate to the historical origins of letter-forms being used
  • To produce finished work which combines historically accurate lettering and illumination to a good standard
  • To produce samples of techniques with instructions in your portfolio
  • An awareness of employment opportunities in the craft sector
  • How to use and store tools and equipment safely and correctly

How will I learn?

  • Through tutor demonstration and instruction
  • Through regular practice and experimentation
  • By producing a small portfolio containing samples, information on techniques you have learned, and photographs of work that you have produced
  • By carrying out critical reviews of your own work and that of others
  • By carrying out research, background reading and visual analysis

What could this course lead to?

It could lead to further courses in calligraphy techniques at intermediate or advanced level.

Your responsibilities as a learner on this course

To ensure that you gain maximum benefit from your course you will need to attend all sessions, be punctual, and bring the correct materials to each session.

Fees for this course do not include the cost of materials and tools. During the course you will need to purchase materials and equipment costing approximately £35

For the first week, please bring your calligraphy pens, practice paper, and your portfolio from beginners level.
