IT Skills for Work - Level 2 Certificate

Course aims

To develop practical IT skills using industry standard software and to gain a nationally recognised IT qualification.

Course length

90 hours - usually 30 weekly sessions of 3 hours.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for anyone with existing computer skills who wants to become a confident, qualified IT user. It would be appropriate for anyone who is looking to work in an environment where they would require more advanced IT skills e.g. as a nurse, a teaching assistant, in an office or in management.

Will I gain any qualifications?

Yes. You will gain a Level 2 ITQ Certificate (TLM).

Do I need any knowledge, skills or qualifications?

No formal qualifications are required, but you must be able to use a computer to a good (Level 1) standard, be able to use a computer's basic functions unaided and have English and Maths to at least level 1 standard. Most learners joining the course will hold a level 1 IT qualification.

Course content

By the end of the course you will be accomplished in the following areas:

  • Word Processing using Microsoft Word ©
  • Creating a formal document such as a business letter or applying for a job
  • File maintenance ñ printing, saving, opening and closing files
  • Inserting tables, images and borders
  • Inserting information from one document into another
  • Mailmerge
  • Spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel ©
  • Creating a new spreadsheet
  • File maintenance ñ printing, saving, opening and closing files
  • Using simple formulae for calculations e.g. SUM, +, -, /, *
  • Replicating (copying) formulas across more than one cell range
  • Using more advanced formulae such as average and count, and conditional formulae such as if copying formulae across more than one cell range 
  • Creating and formatting a chart, which can then be used in presentations
  • Presentations using  Microsoft PowerPoint ©
  • Creating a short presentation from a template (master) slide
  • File maintenance ñ printing, saving, opening and closing files
  • Inserting pictures, charts, tables, and organisation charts into a presentation
  • Adding your speaker notes and timings to a presentation

What could this course lead to?

Following completion of the course you will be able to progress on to a level 3 IT qualification, e.g. ECDL Level 3.

It will also helpful if you are seeking employment in a related industry, e.g. as an office administrator or unqualified teaching assistant (this is also dependent on other skills such as English and Maths).

The skills acquired on the course are also useful for setting up your own business, e.g. using PowerPoint © to sell your business idea, using Excel © to manage your accounts and using Word © to create a flyer advertising your business.

How will I learn?

You will learn in a classroom environment using practical, relevant course materials. There will be group discussions, tutor-led demonstrations, tutorials, small group work, individual demonstrations and peer teaching. You will record your own progress and have your work checked regularly throughout the course. Regular attendance is essential. It is very useful if you have access to a computer to do additional work outside the classroom as this will enable further practice of your new skills, but this is not essential.

What materials or equipment will I need to provide?

You will need a pen, notepad, and a folder to store hand-outs and completed exercises. You will also need to supply a memory stick.

Your commitment as a learner

To achieve success on the course you will need to attend regularly and be on time. If you need to miss a class, please let us know in advance.

You will need to ensure that you allow sufficient time for self-study and complete any homework set. You will be expected to complete all assessments and complete the full course.
