Computers - Second Step

Course aims

To develop computer skills and enable you to understand how to use IT to do simple searches on the internet, send emails and create a document such as a business letter using appropriate software.

Course length

30 hours – usually 15 weekly sessions of 2 hours.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for people with very basic computer knowledge or those who have completed a basic I.T. course such as Computers - First Step. You will further develop your computer skills and gain a qualification.

Will I gain any qualifications?

Yes. You will gain an Entry Level 3 Certificate in Using IT.

Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?

A basic knowledge of IT and how to use a QWERTY keyboard.

Course content

By the end of the full course you will have learnt the following useful information:

  • Use computers to search for useful information: print your findings in a range of formats.
  • Communicate information using emails: know what emails are and how and when to use them; insert images to improve the format of your emails; print and delete un-necessary emails.
  • Display information using IT: use software to create a new document; learn how to change the layout in a document; change text fonts; make changes to enable your text to stand out more; change text position (alignment); improve the display of a document using borders and images; learn how to save and print a document.

What could this course lead to?

Following completion of this course you will be able to progress onto IT Skills for Work - Level 1 qualification or other Level 1 IT courses including Word Processing, Spreadsheets and PowerPoint Presentations.

How will I learn?

You will be taught in a group, by demonstration, through group work, by individual practice and with one-to-one assistance from your tutor.

We aim to match the teaching to a wide range of individual learning styles and to make your learning enjoyable, challenging and rewarding. You will also be given homework to complete outside the classroom.

What materials or equipment will I need to provide?

You will need a pen, notepad, and a folder to store hand-outs and completed exercises. You will also need to supply a memory stick. Access to a computer or any other IT device outside the classroom will be useful, but is not essential.

Your commitments as a learner

To achieve success on the course you will need to attend regularly. If you need to miss a class, please let us know in advance.

You will need to ensure that you allow sufficient time for self-study and complete any homework set. You will be expected to complete all assessments and complete the full course.
