Working towards level 2

Course aims

To improve your reading and writing skills to prepare for progression to Functional Skills courses.

Course length

Courses are usually one session a week. Most courses are 80 hours duration.

Who is this course for?

Adults (19+)  who would like to develop their English skills for everyday life and work. You will be taking this course prior to joining an English Functional Skills qualification class.

Will I gain any qualification?

No. You will have an Individual Learning Plan which sets targets that are personal to you.  Targets will be added  throughout the course to develop your English skills and support your journey to achieve long term goals.

Your tutor will give you feedback on what you are doing well and what you need to do to improve and progress to Functional Skills qualifications.

Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?

Your writing skills will be assessed before you join the course to make sure that the course is the right level for you. You will have a qualification at Entry 3 or above

Content

  • Improve your reading, writing and verbal communication skills in real life contexts
  • Identify the purpose and features of different sorts of texts
  • Understand how longer sentences and texts are constructed
  • Be able to use punctuation to aid meaning
  • Be able to proof read text for grammar and punctuation errors
  • Know and use strategies to learn spellings and spell better

What could this course lead to?

At the end of the course, your tutor will check your skills to see what you are ready to do next: Level 1 or Level 2 Functional English.

How will I learn?

A combination of individual work, group work, class discussions, online study and internet research; plus you will have access to an online English course to support your learning. You will have an online Individual Learning Plan which sets targets that are personal to you.  Targets will be added  throughout the course to develop your English skills and support your journey to achieve long term goals. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on what you are doing well and what you need to do to improve.

What we require of you as a learner?

You will be invited to a 1:1 progress review with your tutor at least once every half term.  This will take place either half an hour before or after your normal class time.

Paper, pen and ring binder plus, if possible, bring along your own device (smartphone or tablet) to access online dictionaries and apps to support your English learning in class.  You will also need to be prepared to do some individual work at home between classes. To improve your progress on the course we expect you to attend on time and every session.  If you are unable to attend a session, you will be required to email your tutor with the reason for non-attendance and you will be set work to complete at home.
