Subject techniques: This course is designed for both beginners and those with some experience of jewellery making. Covering a range of techniques. This six week course is perfect for teaching you how to make unique gifts to give to loved ones or to give you a chance to create your own festive jewellery or decorations.
Tools/ equipment: Use tools and materials accurately, safely and correctly.
Research + enrichment: Online research of designs, techniques and costings.
Sustainability: Upcycle jewellery components.
Project / Product outcome
Program teaching is delivered through a blend of classroom teaching and online learning, for example:
- Tutor demonstrations
- Practical activities
- Research discussions
You will be expected to work independently and engage in group tasks in order to develop your skills and knowledge. The course covers a range of techniques, skills, sustainability and an awareness of employment other opportunities in the subject.
What will you learn?
You will learn the art of festive jewellery making incorporating festivals from around the world. You will learn how to use a variety of techniques, tools and equipment, whilst making items such as rings, pendants, earrings etc as well as looking at how to present your pieces, for example packaging and displaying. Those with previous experience of jewellery making will be able to make functional or decorative pieces working with the tutor to enhance the designing and making process. All learners will be able to take their final pieces home.
On completion of this course you will be able to:
- Use tools, materials and equipment correctly.
- Understand the theory of colour matching.
- Produce samples of techniques with instructions to form a portfolio.
Suitability
No previous experience of jewellery making or formal entry requirements are needed, but as the course involves taking notes and measurements, you will need to have basic levels of English and Maths. You will have a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that it is suitable for you.

Your responsibilities as a learner on this course
To ensure that you gain maximum benefit from your course you will need to attend all sessions, be punctual and to bring the correct materials to each session. A commitment to working independently outside the classroom is required.
Costs – Additional to course fees
Tools and equipment are available for your use at the centres. However, you will need to purchase some tools and materials for your project.
The additional course costs are estimated at approximately £50 per term.
Equipment you will need:
- Head pins, Lobster claw clasps, Eye pins, Spring ring clasps, Jump rings, Hook ear wires, Crimp beads,
- A selection of beads, Round nose pliers, Tiger tail wire, Flat nose pliers, Memory wire, Wire cutters,
- Jewellery making chain and stretch elastic.
