IT Skills for Work - Level 1 

Course aims

To develop computer skills which you will be able to use in the work environment.

Course length

40 hours - usually 20 weekly sessions of 2 hours

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for anyone who has a basic level of IT skills and wants to gain more insight into the uses of computers in the world of work. This course is not suitable for complete beginners.

Will I gain any qualifications?

Yes. You will gain a Level 1 ITQ Award or Certificate.

Do I need any knowledge, skills or qualifications?

No previous IT qualification is needed, but you will need to be able to use a computer unaided and have at least English at Level 1

Course content

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Use Microsoft Word to a suitable level, e.g. to be able to produce a draft CV.
  • Use internet and email with confidence e.g. to send and receive emails with attachments.
  • In addition, if doing the Award qualification you can decide with your tutor to complete one of the following units, which will be included in the Certificate:
    • Use Microsoft Excel to be able to create a spreadsheet using simple formulae
    • Use Microsoft PowerPoint to be able to create a slide show presentation using different themes, timings and animation

What could this course lead to?

You could progress to a Level 2 qualification in IT or you may choose to do one of our Business Admin or Accounting qualifications. It could help you to gain employment in an IT office environment or you could use your skills to help set up your own business.

How will I learn?

All learners will have access to a computer for individual practice. There will be some small group work and one-to- one tuition as required. Worksheets and hand-outs will be used. We aim to match the teaching to a wide range of individual learning styles and to make your learning enjoyable, challenging and rewarding.

What materials or equipment will I need to provide?

You will need a pen, notepad, and a folder to store hand-outs and completed exercises. You will also need to supply a memory stick. Access to a computer or any other IT device outside the classroom will be useful, but is not essential.

Your commitment as a learner

To achieve success on the course you will need to attend regularly. If you need to miss a class, please let us know in advance.

You will need to ensure that you allow sufficient time for self-study and complete any homework set. You will be expected to complete all assessments and complete the full course.
