Explore the use your camera controls to capture motion and movement

This short course focuses on basic skills and techniques. Learn how to use your camera and take creative control. This is a hands-on practical course with enrichment visits to develop your camera skills further.

Learn how to capture motion in your photos by controlling the camera's shutter speed. Experiment with slow shutter speeds enable moving objects to blur naturally, creating an effective sense of movement. Practise using camera controls with fast shutter movements and consider exposure, aperture, light factors and composition.

What to expect from the course

  • Camera controls: You will learn the principles of exposure and use Aperture and Shutter Priority and Manual settings to create motion images.
  • You will also examine composition and colour balance. 
  • Explore photography styles and advance your knowledge through themed research and activities to consider both classic and current photography trends. 
  • Photographic post-production: Develop basic skills using software to learn about colour balance, brightness and contrast, and other techniques to improve your images.

Entry requirements

Interest in the Creative Arts and Design/ Photography. No formal entry requirements, however, you will need some basic IT knowledge.

You will need a DSLR/mirrorless camera. Some tools and computers and software available you your use at the Centre. You may wish to purchase some tools and materials to complete your work, this can be discussed with your tutor if required.
