Introduction to Counselling Skills

Course aims

These qualifications are designed to give learners the core knowledge, skills and competencies required to use counselling and coaching skills ethically and safely in various contexts and roles.

What could these courses lead to?

Careers that would benefit from Counselling Skills include; Human Resources (HR) Nursing & Healthcare, Teaching, any Team Leaders and Managers.

To become a practising counsellor, learners need to achieve a subject specialism at level 4/5. These courses are assessed through a portfolio of evidence and, in some cases, an external exam as well.

In 2021-2022 the average salary for a qualified counsellor was £26,582

18 hours (6 weeks of 3 hours)

Who is this course for?

This course is for those who would like to develop their own understanding of counselling and helping roles.

Entry requirements

You must have English skills at level 1 or above.

Course content

You will learn about:

  • Helping relationships
  • The legislation and professional bodies that relate to counselling
  • Communication and different approaches to counselling
  • Assessment of your own skills and, self-reflection

Will I gain any qualifications?

You will complete a workbook with the support of the tutor and achieve a BAES certificate.

Support if you are registered unemployed, looking for a job or a better job – Route to Work

As part of your learning programme, we will support you to develop the skills you need to get a job or a better job, such as CV writing, application forms, interviews and working in a team.  Your tutor will discuss your individual learning and development needs to agree with you which of our Route to Work short courses will best suit your needs and enrol you on these modules.

How will I learn?

You will be taught and supported by a tutor. You will be expected to attend your group once a week and participate in group and paired activities and discussions; this may be a mixture of face to face and online learning. You will build a portfolio of evidence and complete specific tasks with the guidance of your tutor. Independent study and research are required.

Your commitments as a learner

To achieve success on the course, you will need to attend regularly. If you need to miss a class, please let us know in advance. You will need to ensure that you allow sufficient time for self-study and complete any homework set. You will be expected to complete all assessments and complete the full course.
