English - Entry 2 Award / Prepare for Entry 2
Course aims
- To improve writing skills
- To prepare you to join an Entry 2 Functional Skills course
- To develop your ability to understand and use effective English in your everyday life and work
Course length
Courses are 2 sessions a week. Most courses start in September and finish in December
Who is this course for?
Adults (19+) or young people (16 - 18) who want to build on beginner’s reading and writing skills. You should already speak English clearly.
Will I gain any qualification?
You will do City and Guilds Themed Award in Writing at Entry 2. You do the exam in class.
All our English courses embed development of study, IT and job skills to help prepare you for study at higher levels and improve work prospects.
Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?
You need to know the letters and sounds of the alphabet, be able to read and write your name and address and some everyday words.
Content
- Use grammar and punctuation to help make your writing clear
- Spell everyday words and words that are important to you
- Use spelling methods to learn how to spell common words
- Use letter sounds and words shapes to work out what words say.
- Write a range of simple texts using present and past tense
- Complete everyday forms
- Gain Entry 2 Award in English Skills - Writing

What we require of you as a learner?
You will need to bring some paper, a pen and a folder to keep your work in plus, if possible, bring along your own device (smartphone or tablet) to access online dictionaries and apps to support your English learning in class. To ensure you make good progress, we expect students to attend every session and arrive on time.
You will have an Individual Learning Plan, which includes some course targets shared by the whole class and some targets which are personal to you. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on what you are doing well and what you need to do to improve.
