English Entry 3 Functional Skills

Course aims

  • To get better at reading, writing, speaking and listening in real-life contexts
  • To use English more effectively in your everyday life and work
  • To gain a Functional English qualification at Entry 3

Course length

Most courses start in January and finish in July. These run for 2 sessions a week. The courses, which start in January follow on from English Entry 3 Awards

Who is this course for?

Adults (19+) who would like to develop their English skills for everyday life and work.

Will I gain any qualification?

Yes. OCR Functional English at Entry 3. There is reading test and a writing test. You can do these in the classroom when you are ready. You also have to take part of in a formal and informal discussion. The tutor will watch you do this and take notes. You will have lots of chance to practise the skills you need in class before you do the tests.

Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?

We will check your reading and writing skills before you join the course. This is to make sure that the course is the right level for you. You will already have skills at Entry 2. You may already have passed an Entry 2 qualification. You may already have some English Awards at Entry 3.

Content

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand the main points of what you read
  • Read and understand different types of text and find information from them
  • Read for different purposes (eg. find detail, get the main idea, decide if it’s worth reading)
  • Plan, draft and organise writing, so that it is in a sensible order
  • Write for different purposes and different readers and use correct basic grammar
  • Check work for accuracy, including spelling
  • Take an effective part in formal and informal discussions

What could this course lead to?

At the end of the course, your tutor will check your skills to see what you are ready to do next.

  • English Level 1 Awards is what most people will do next
  • Another sort of class with us or at college

How will I learn?

  • You will work in groups with other learners, on your own, have class discussions, and use computers. You will have an Individual Learning Plan. This will have your goals on it. The whole class will work towards some goals. Some goals will be just for you. Your tutor will talk to you about what you are doing well and what you need to do to get better.
  • Use of Learner Zone (online course to support your learning)

What we require of you as a learner?

Paper, pen and ring binder. You will also need to do some work at home between classes. To ensure you make good progress, we expect students to attend every session and arrive on time.
