English - Level 1 Award / Prepare for Level 1

Course aims

  • To improve your reading and writing skills
  • To develop your ability to understand and use effective English in your everyday life and work
  • To prepare you to join an English Level 1 Functional Skills course

Course length

Courses are usually 2 sessions a week. Most courses start in September and finish in December. These run twice a week. If the course runs once a week, it will run from September to July.

Who is this course for?

Adults (19+) or young people (16 - 18) who would like to develop their English skills for everyday life and work.  You will be taking this course prior to joining an English Level 1 Functional Skills qualification, to give you as long as possible to develop your skills.

Will I gain any qualification?

Ascentis Awards in English Skills - Reading and Writing.  All our English courses embed development of study, IT and job skills to help prepare you for study at higher levels and improve work prospects.

Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?

Your reading and writing skills will be assessed before you join the course to make sure that the course is the right level for you. You will have a qualification or skills at Entry 3 or above.

Content

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Read better for different purposes
  • Identify the purpose and features of some different types of text
  • Consider your audience and produce more effective letters, reports, emails and promotional leaflets
  • Plan, draft and proof read to improve your writing

What could this course lead to?

At the end of the course, your tutor will check your skills to see what you are ready to do next.

  • English - Level 1 Functional English if you are ready to progress to this qualification straight after the Part One Awards course.
  • English Part Two Awards if you need to develop your skills further before moving onto Functional Skills.

How will I learn?

A combination of individual work, group work, class discussions, ICT use and individual research sessions. You will have an Individual Learning Plan, which includes some course targets shared by the whole class and some targets which are personal to you. Your tutor will give you feedback on what you are doing well and what you need to do to improve.  Use of Learner Zone (online course to support your learning)

What we require of you as a learner?

Paper, pen and ring binder plus, if possible, bring along your own device (smartphone or tablet) to access online dictionaries and apps to support your English learning in class.   You will also need to be prepared to do some individual work at home between classes. To improve your progress on the course we expect you to attend on time and every session.
