Breaking down the barriers to achieving your potential

If you would like to access our courses or learning opportunities but think you will need extra support to be successful in the classroom our team are here to help.

Our Learner Support Team have a wealth of knowledge and experience in providing assistance and support to help adults with learning difficulties or disabilities access courses and achieve their learning goals.

We are not just here to get you onto a course, during your time with BAES we will be available to support you through your course and help to find ways to deal with any additional difficulties you may encounter during your time with us.

Information, Advice & Guidance

Breaking down barriers to learning

Our Learner Services team are here to help you achieve your learning goals.

Birmingham Adult Education Service holds the matrix Standard. This is the national quality standard for Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG).

This means that we offer you a welcoming and safe environment in which to discuss your learning needs. We will also ensure that the information given to you is impartial and confidential, and will refer you to another provider if necessary.

All our staff are committed to supporting learners to achieve and progress on their courses and we offer a range of support to help. This includes specialist support for learners with disabilities; additional English and maths; advice on funding and childcare.

Statement of Service

Statement of Service - Information and Advice for Learning and Work

You are entitled to:

  • Free 1:1 interview with comprehensive information and advice about learning and work
  • A safe, healthy and welcoming environment in which to discuss your needs
  • Impartial, confidential information and advice from specialist and experienced staff
  • A referral to another adult learning provider if more suitable
  • Information and advice on a range of extra support, for example, childcare; funding; additional English and Maths
  • Support if you have a disability in line with the Equality Act 2010
  • Information in an accessible format. For example, on request, we can change the print size and/or colour of text and background to make it easier for you to read
  • Bring an interpreter if you cannot understand English
  • Equality and respect as an individual
  • A serious response from BAES if you are discriminated against
  • Opportunities to comment on the quality of the Information and Advice Service
  • In-depth careers guidance

What we ask of you:

  • Take advantage of the information and advice about courses offered by BAES
  • Respect the values, privacy and property of others
  • Let us know if you have physical or sensory disability, mental ill health or learning disability as we may be able to offer additional support
  • Do not accept any form of discrimination and report it if it happens
  • Comply with health and safety requirements
  • Give feedback to BAES on the Information and Advice Service

Different needs, different support

It is important to BAES that learners choose the right course, whether it is to help you get a job, or develop your skills for work or improve your health and well being.

We have a trained and experienced Learner Services Team on hand to help you make the right choices and a range of support measures that we can put in place to help you reach your goals. We will however make it clear what we can offer you, how it will be done, by when and by whom.
