The people of Birmingham in their own words

My Voice is a writing event for learners enrolled on our Writing Development and English classes and was initially conceived as a project for Adult Learners' Week 2012.

The aim of the "My Voice" project is to encourage creativity in our English courses, through the sharing of stories and poems; to give learners a real opportunity to have a voice, talk about things that matter to them and share these thoughts and feelings with a much wider audience. Equally, we feel it is important to recognise and celebrate the high level of work students are producing. The quality of work submitted led us to believe that we were capturing an important collection of Birmingham voices that needed to be widely heard.

The brief for our learners is simple; to write poems and short stories that may be fictional or based on real and lasting experiences from learners’ everyday lives. The results have been hugely positive. All of these stories are unique, many are entertaining, some are thought-provoking and others tell inspiring tales of overcoming adversity.
