My Happy Place
On Monday 11 December, Brasshouse Centre at the Library of Birmingham hosted a group of learners who had come together to celebrate their contributions to our annual foreign languages writing competition.
The aim of the My Happy Place project was for learners to describe in a foreign language a special place where they feel most safe and content. To further focus the minds of the learners each submission had to be under fifty words in length. On the night there was an exhibition of all the submissions and a special souvenir booklet for all the attendees.
Local author meets Brasshouse learners
Birmingham Adult Education Service had the privilege of welcoming Nargis Darby to our latest Meet the Author event at Brasshouse Centre on Tuesday 24 October.
Nargis Darby, a local author who has overcome incredible odds read extracts from her new book A Different Shade of Love, discussed its plot and themes, and answered questions from learners.
African drumming in Aston
As part of our Black History Month celebrations we were delighted to welcome Asha Barnes, a local musician, to run an African Drumming lesson at our Aston centre.
Asha has been working as a session musician for over ten years and has toured with some big names in music including UB40. He brought an extensive collection of these brilliant instruments with him, all of which were played by participants in the session.
Mayor of West Midlands visits Brasshouse Centre
Thank you to Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, for visiting BAES to find out more about our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provision.
The visit was a great opportunity for us to shine a spotlight on our inspirational learners and to showcase how our courses help asylum seekers and refugees to settle in Birmingham and find employment.
