Upholstery - Chair Caning - Beginners

Course Aims

This course will enable you to learn the skills you will need to cane your own chosen project, such as a small chair seat.

Will I gain a qualification?

No - this is a non-accredited course.

Course Length

The course is for 12 weeks consisting of 30 guided learning hours. Please check the BAES web site www.learnbaes.ac.uk , BAES Learning Directory, visit or telephone one of our adult learning centres for details.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone, including beginners, with an interest in chair caning.

Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?

You won’t need experience chair caning for this course. However, because the course involves taking notes and measurements you will need to have basic levels of English and maths. You will have a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that it is suitable for you.

What will I learn?

  • To produce small samples of different cane patterns
  • To use tools safely and correctly
  • How to apply single stranded cane and pre-woven sheet cane
  • Two different finishing techniques
  • An awareness of employment opportunities in the upholstery industry

What could this course lead to?

It could lead to other short courses in other chair restoration techniques, or upholstery at Beginners Level.

How will I learn?

  • Tutor demonstration and instruction
  • Exploring equipment, tools and techniques
  • Producing cane samples of different patterns
  • By producing a small portfolio containing samples, information on techniques you have learned, and photographs of projects that you have made.

Your responsibilities as a learner on this course

To ensure that you gain maximum benefit from your course you will need to attend all sessions, be punctual, and bring the correct materials to each session.

Important information

Access to tools and equipment is available at our centres. You will need to provide your own cane, pegs, small chair or stool with a seat for caning, small wooden frame for cane samples and a small container for holding water. It will cost an average of £40 for all your materials for the course. Further information will be provided by the tutor at enrolment.

For the first week, you will need to bring a folder, pen and a picture of your project (if possible).
