Course aim

This course will enable you to further develop levels of skill in using carpentry tools, equipment and techniques to produce items of furniture and carry out repairs to wooden articles

No - this is a non-accredited course.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who wants to learn how to use, tool, techniques and materials required to be able to independently produce or repair wooden items.

Entry requirements

You will need experience of woodwork at beginners’ level to join this course. As the course involves taking notes and measurements you will need to have basic levels of English and maths. You will have a short initial assessment at the start of the course to ensure that it is suitable for you.

What will I learn?

  • How to use tools (including power tools) and equipment safely and correctly
  • How to take and record accurate measurements and angles
  • How to produce different joints according to requirement
  • To produce samples of techniques with instructions in your portfolio
  • An awareness of employment opportunities in the woodwork industry

How will I learn?

  • Through tutor demonstration and instruction
  • By exploring equipment, tools and techniques
  • By producing small woodwork projects
  • By producing a small portfolio containing samples, information on techniques you have learned, and photographs of woodwork joints and items that you have made

What could this course lead to?

It could lead to further courses in woodwork techniques at intermediate or advanced Level.

Your responsibilities as a learner on this course

To ensure that you gain maximum benefit from your course you will need to attend all sessions, be punctual, and bring the correct materials to each session.

Important information: Tools and equipment will be available for you to use at the centre during class times. It will cost an average of £20 for basic tools and equipment to enable you to practise at home, and roughly £30 for all your materials. Further information will be provided by the tutor at enrolment.

For the first week, you will need to bring a folder, paper and pen.
