Introduction to SAGE
This course introduces students to the use of accounting software. It is suited for those who require basic skills to manage their finances within the home and create income and expenditure reports for businesses.
Course length: 21 hours
SAGE - Intermediate
This course provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to carry out typical bookkeeping transactions and tasks using accounting software and Excel.
SAGE - Advanced
This course aims to build on skills gained through SAGE Introduction and SAGE Intermediate course such as developing key practical skills used in every business.

Who is the course for?
This course offers you the opportunity to develop key practical skills used in most businesses as a route into employment or be of interest to those already in employment. The qualification will particularly suit those who:
- have minimal work experience
- are seeking to validate their existing skills to enter or progress in their career
- are self-employed or working in small businesses who wish to use SAGE accounting software
Will I gain any qualification?
Yes, at the end of each level you will gain a certificate of competence and achievement from Birmingham Adult Education Service (BAES).
Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?
No prior knowledge, skills or qualifications are required. A basic level of English is needed as this will help you to read and understand the materials provided.
Content
You will set up a company and record financial transactions from a variety of documents. You will also be able to recognise potential risks to accounting software security and know how to protect against accounting software threats. The course outcomes are:
- understanding the benefits and risks of using accounting software.
- setting up company accounts.
- creating customer and supplier records
- recording bank and cash transactions
- producing reports using accounting software
What is the difference between Bookkeeping & SAGE?
A manual bookkeeping system will simply record the incomings (income) and outgoings (expenditure) of a business. A business will need to retain certain documents in order to keep a track of its financial affairs. Sage accounting is a software program that allows small business owners to track their income and expenses in multiple currencies, as well as track inventory and managing their financial documents. This accounting software is suitable for small to medium sized businesses.
What could this course lead to?
This course is intended to support you in gaining employment. You will benefit from an understanding of manual bookkeeping upon completion of this course. This experience will help you progress confidently onto AAT Award in Bookkeeping Level 1 course through AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians).

How will I learn?
Learning for this course is onsite at our Brasshouse centre. Your teacher will explain how your course will be delivered. You will be shown how to access Birmingham Adult Education Services (BAES) Virtual Learning Environment (VLE - Moodle) which is a secure online tool which provides you with resources and support for your studies.
You will be able to access resources like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Padlet, to engage in activities, study independently, and participate in group discussions with your teacher. You will record your own progress and have your work checked regularly throughout the course.

Programming - Level 1 (Gateway)
Introduction to Programming - Level 1 (Gateway)
Course aims
Ever wanted to know more a about how computer games and are made? Wonder how those apps you use on your phone are developed? This course will equip you to the skills you need to understand and learn basic coding techniques. This course is a good starting point for anyone wanting to explore further qualifications or even a career in coding/programming.
Course length
46 Guided Learning Hours.
Who is this course for?
Those with some IT skills and a keen interest in the more logical programming side of IT. Those wishing to progress into jobs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) industries and in the digital skills sector. Coding is part of the new Digital Agenda and is being taught in schools, colleges and to adults. If you want to find out what it’s all about this is the course for you.
Will I gain any qualifications?
Yes. This is a level 1 qualification.
Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?
This course is not suitable for complete beginners. You do not need any previous IT qualifications, but you will need a logical mind and a very keen interest in computer coding in general. You must also have English and Maths skills at Level 1 or above.
Course content
By the end of this course, you will be able to use basic coding in languages such as Python and JavaScript and be able to identify and repair coding errors in a program.
- Learn in languages such as Python and JavaScript
- Understand basic coding language
- Create and use sprites
- Use Boolean logic such as such as IF and Not
- Understand how to use a loop(s)
- Create your own mini games or apps
- Be able to plan and review your won and others work and improve it (debug)
What could this course lead to?
This course is part of our digital pathway and could support your future employment in technical fields such as programming, project management, creative digital arts and working for such employers as HS2. It will also support you to design your own website.
In a dedicated IT classroom and also at home online, using written course materials and online learning resources. There will be group discussions, tutor-led demonstrations, tutorials, work in small groups, individual and peer (working with other learners) teaching. You may also be asked to do homework to expand your skills.
What materials or equipment will I need to provide?
You will need a pen, notepad, and a folder to store hand-outs and completed exercises. You will also need to supply a memory stick. Ideally, you will have access to a computer outside the classroom and you will need to have an email account. Having access to online storage is advisable.
What we require of you as a learner?
To achieve success on the course you will need to attend regularly. If you need to miss a class, please let us know in advance. You will need to ensure that you allow sufficient time for self-study and complete any homework set.

Course aims
This course aims to introduce you to the business environment, skills needed for the workplace, the importance of team-working, communications, effective time management and the need for professional behaviour.
Course length
75 guided learning hours, 5 hour sessions per week.
Who is this course for?
This course offers you the opportunity to:
- develop key practical skills used in every business as a route into employment.
- have minimal work experience or need additional support to progress.
This may include younger learners, those on traineeships seeking basic employability skills, adults seeking to validate their existing skills to enter into the workplace, or those who want to study higher level AAT qualifications but would like to test their abilities before progressing further with AAT.
Will I gain any qualification?
Yes. You must successfully achieve one mandatory unit assessment to achieve the AAT Award in Business Skills – Level 1 qualification.
Do I need any prior knowledge, skills or qualifications?
No prior knowledge, skills or qualifications are required. A basic level of English and Maths is required at Level 1 as this will help you to read and understand the materials provided.
