Preparing to Work in Schools - Level 1 Pathway
CACHE L1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools plus English and Maths
Length of course
- 190 guided learning hours. Usually 1 day 38 X 5 hours plus
- 87.5 guided learning hours in Maths usually ½ day 35x 2.5 hours
- 87.5 guided learning hours in English usually ½ day 35x 2.5 hours
- Plus a short block placement in a suitable school environment
Who is this course for?
This qualification is for those looking to work or volunteer in a school environment.
Entry requirements
Learners must be at least 18 years of age. You must have English at Level 1 or above and maths at Entry 3 or above.

- Schools as an organisation
- The external professional who may work in schools
- Different areas of learning
- How to keep children safe
Will I gain a qualification?
You will gain a CACHE Level 1 Award in Preparing to work in Schools and may also have the opportunity to gain an accreditation in English and/or maths. These qualifications can support you in gaining employment.
How will I learn?
You are expected to take part in group and paired activities and discussions. You will build a portfolio of evidence and some independent study and research is expected along with completion of a block placement towards the end of the course.
What could this course lead to?
Progression advice can be provided by a Learning Support Manager. This can be arranged by the course tutor.
What material or equipment will I need to provide?
Lever arch folder, dividers, pens, paper
Course completion: Completion is expected within the academic year. Learners whose completion is delayed may be subject to an additional assessment fee.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
DBS checks are carried out on everyone who works with, or trains to work with children, young people and vulnerable adults. BAES will carry out these checks before you start a work placement that is relevant to your classroom work course along with a right to work check.
For enrolment on classroom work courses and for your DBS check you must provide original approved documents which give evidence of your identity and address
To get a full DBS check you must have been a resident in this country for at least five years. If you have not been a resident for at least five years, you must also produce a Statement of Good Conduct (written in English) from your previous country BEFORE you can be enrolled onto a classroom work course.
If you have a criminal record which may bar you from working with children and vulnerable adults, please discuss this with a member of staff before enrolling as all previous convictions and cautions will be disclosed and this could prevent you from completing your placement.
